I'll put in another vote for the Kubota B2710. I have 24 acres of which I regularly mow about 12 using a 5' Rhino rotary cutter (shredder or brush hog). Now that I have cut it down to size it takes about 7 hours to mow it all, in medium range. There are lots of trees to dodge and mow around, so it would be quicker if completely cleared off.

My Kubota B2710 HST stops quick when you let off the pedal. Maybe its not quite like throwing on the brakes, but I seldom ever touch the brakes.

My dealer told me I didn't really need to change the hydro fluid after I had already done it at 50 hours. My screen also had some metal filings in it. I'll go by the manual myself.<br>The 5W-40 vs 5W-30 oil should only be of benefit in hot weather. In cold weather I would stick to 5W-30.

When I drag stuff or pull up small trees, I hook the chain on a collar hitch on the drawbar which is mounted BELOW the rear axle. The harder it pulls, the more the front of the tractor goes DOWN, so it wouldn't seem to be a problem. I pull up trees by getting a running start and if the tree doesn't come out the tractor just stops and starts spinning - I have never had the front end come off the ground. Buckle your seatbelt though, because it might be quite a jolt if your load gets hung up.

I financed my Kubota for 60 months. There was a one time charge of about $300 or so that covers the tractor for the whole 60 months regardless of what happens to it, including losing it off the trailer. That was on a 2710.

I pick the front wheels off the ground all the time although its not necessarily on purpose. It just happens when you're trying to get a good bite. Of course then you can't steer so you have to let up so the front end will come back down.

My Kubota B2710 handles a 5' cutter just fine. Being as the 4200 has about the same HP it should work fine with it also.

Droz, if your mowing the entire 40 acres with that 4100 your butt is a lot tougher than mine. I doubt if thats the case, however, the point I was trying to make is that mowing is a time consuming, boring job and anything that can speed it up is good. A bigger tractor can mow faster because it uses larger implements, and with more power you can go faster. I advised to get a bigger tractor that you think you need because if I think many tractor buyers initially under-evaluate the mowing job.<br>With the right tires and careful driving the tire scuffing problem can be minimized, and still save a lot of mowing time. Not pushing Kubota (I have the 2710 myself), but I read where the JD 4000 series tractors apparently have more of a scuffing problem than Kubota. My tractor has R4 tires and doesn't scuff at all, although it is very dry and the ground is very firm where I mow. The B2710 weighs a whole lot less than the JD 4200 which has about the same horsepower. You would think that would translate to less turf damage although I don't have first hand knowledge of the JD.<br>I would hate to cut my 12 acres with a smaller tractor, but if I had only half as much to cut I wouldn't want a smaller tractor. Thats why I recommended the 2710 for the 6.5 acres.

JD also costs more. Do you mean as a percentage of original street price? Down here the Kubota dealers say they have better resale, while the JD dealer says they have better resale. With cars, there are studies you can look at, but have never seen one for tractors. Could be a regional thing. Not that it matters since I already have a Kubota. I was just interested on whether there were some studies on the subject.

I have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of cut from my rotary cutter (Rhino SE5 - 5'). No, it doesn't look like a golf course or even a well kept yard. But my field grass looks even and freshly cut.<br>A finish mower is ONLY good for lawn grasses. Mine really sucks for coarse or tall weeds. However its cuts bermuda beautifully. The rotary cutter doesn't leave anything standing, including saplings and brush. I haven't sharpened mine since I got it and it still cuts fine. As a matter of fact it wasn't super sharp when I got it.<br>I think bottom line is, if you want it to look like a freshly mown field, go for the rotary cutter, but if you want it to look like a lawn or golf course go for the finish mower. I have both and use both.<br>My original plan was to mow my field a few times with the rotary cutter and then start mowing with the finish mower. I have decided to stick with the rotary cutter because I like the way the field looks, and I don't have to mow as often as it doesn't bog down on thick or tall grass. I use the finish mower only on what I have previously been mowing with a riding mower.

I have a similar problem with my 2710. My R4 tires have the amount of pressure recommended in the manual. The rears have 20 pounds and the fronts more - I forget how much. I'm afraid to let much air out of the rears because those tires are so stiff you can't tell how low the tires are. I have driven one of the rears right off the rim because I couldn't tell it was seriously low. It was nearly impossible to get it aired back up.<br>The field I mow with rotary cutter apparently was a plowed field years and ago and is still pretty rough. I mow in medium range but can't go as fast as I would like or the cutter will cut because of the roughness. It not only beats me to death, I'm afraid I'll shake something loose on the tractor. The loader really doesn't have any play at all any, but it does get to bouncing pretty good.<br>These things just don't have any suspensions under them, and if I did I guess they wouldn't do what they do as well.

Apparently. I can't help you on WHO makes it, but I saw one today while I was driving by the old tractor repair garage here in town. It looked like it was real old, but it indeed had 2 trailing wheels.

I have a 5 footer on my B2710 and it works great. Seems to be the perfect weight for the loader, and find it easy to control. Its cuts beautifully as fast as I can go with getting bucked off the tractor in my rough pasture.

Always. Last Sunday a 35 year old man was killed while brush-hogging about 2 or 3 miles from my 24 acres. The story I hear is that he ran into a hornets nest (around here that probably means yellowjackets) on flat ground. While fighting them off he apparently fell off the tractor and was run over by the mower. I don't know whether he was wearing his seatbelt and took it off to get away from the yellowjackets, or whether he wasn't wearing it and just fell off the tractor.<br>Wearing the seat belt is not much trouble, and your children need you, so wear it.

I have a Kubota 2710. The hydraulic hoses aren't close to the tires, but there is a loop of hoses that sort of sticks up in the air on the right side - top of the loader. I have been somewhat concerned about thorns from low limbs catching the hoses while mowing, but there is a black canvas like cover wrapped around the bundle, and it seems to be pretty durable. So far no sticks. Maybe this is something that you can pick up to wrap around your hoses.
